Located to the west of the Bordeaux metropolis, the town of Saint-Médard-en-Jalles is experiencing strong urban growth and major developments in terms of planning and mobility.
To support these transformations, Bordeaux Métropole confided to Explain the realization of a Communal displacement study, in order to rethink the functioning of the road network and to integrate new structural projects.

The study was based on a comprehensive approach:

  1. Diagnosis and analysis of current functioning
    • Study of the road network, parking, public transport and active mobility.
    • Identification of saturation points and traffic imbalances.
  2. Development of traffic plan scenarios
    • Definition and modeling of several scenarios integrating urban projects and expected changes in flows.
    • Static simulation and functional tests at key intersections.
    • Multi-criteria assessment: fluidity, security, accessibility, compatibility with metropolitan guidelines.
  3. Coordination and decision support
    • Presentation of the scenarios to the municipality and to Bordeaux Métropole.
    • Technical support for the selection of the scenario to be retained and formulation of operational recommendations.

This approach made it possible to translate political choices into readable and reasoned scenarios, facilitating decision-making and the programming of short and medium term developments.

Objectifs clés

The study aimed to adapt the municipal traffic plan to urban developments and to the sustainable mobility objectives set by Bordeaux Métropole.
The main objectives were to:

  • Guarantee the coherence between urban planning and traffic organization ;
  • Encourage the requalification of public spaces by giving more space to active modes;
  • Anticipate the impacts of future projects on the overall functioning of the network;
  • Bringing to the community a Objective decision support through simulation.

Bénéfices

The mission allowed Bordeaux Métropole to have a planning aid tool and a clear vision of the actions to be undertaken. The modeling conducted by Explain made it possible to validate technical feasibility of the selected scenario while measuring its effects on travel of all modes.The study reinforced the coherence between urbanism, mobility and living environment, by integrating security and ecological transition issues into local planning.

Conclusion

The study conducted in Saint-Médard-en-Jalles illustrates the relevance of an approach combining diagnosis, modeling and consultation to define adapted, pragmatic and shared traffic plans.
