As part of the Preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, theEPI 78/92 wanted to have a precise and comprehensive knowledge of road traffic on the circular boulevard of La Défense.
Given the intensity of the traffic, the complexity of the network and the strategic nature of the site, the solution of automatic camera counts has emerged as the most suitable.

Explain ensured the complete implementation of the system:

  • Installation and configuration of 15 measurement points on the entire circular boulevard;
  • Video capture over two periods of three weeks each, covering different traffic profiles;
  • Treatment of almost 10,000 hours of recordings in a short time thanks to innovative digital solutions.

The performance of the mission is based on a Optimized IT architecture via the Cloud and on the use of machine learning and computer vision algorithms developed internally.
Instead of a raw count, Explain preferred a approach by reconstruction of trajectories and semi-supervised clustering, guaranteeing better robustness, especially in disturbed situations (congestion, multiple flows, light variations).

The results allowed EPI to have a complete diagnosis of flows across the entire perimeter, constituting a technical reference base for managing travel during major events and future development projects in the neighborhood.

Objectifs clés

The objective of the mission was to provide accurate, continuous, and reliable traffic data on the circular boulevard of La Défense, in view of major projects and the 2024 Olympic Games.
Explain aimed to:

  • Deploy a automated methodology adapted to a complex urban environment ;
  • Exploit the video and artificial intelligence to improve the reliability and granularity of counts;
  • Deliver to the PPE of usable indicators for traffic planning and regulation.

Bénéfices

The study made it possible to obtain a detailed and unprecedented vision of road flows at La Défense, over a long period of time and with greater precision than conventional methods. The technical innovations deployed by Explain have made it possible to reduce processing times while improving the quality of results.This mission also served as operational test bench for future automated territory counting campaigns, consolidating the capabilities of EPI in terms of mobility monitoring.

Conclusion

This counting campaign at La Défense illustrates the capacity ofExplain To be mobilized technology and scientific expertise to meet the complex challenges of dense urban mobility.By combining innovation, reliability and operational performance, Explain contributed to equipping the EPI 78/92 with a strategic tool for knowledge of flows, serving the planning and management of trips in Europe's largest business district.
